Okuma Cavalla CAV-5II RH: The Versatile 2-Speed All-Rounder

At Gerrys Fishing, we often get asked for a reel that can do it all on a boat. While the narrow-spool versions are great for jigging, the Okuma Cavalla CAV-5II is the standard-width powerhouse that offers the extra line capacity needed for deeper water and heavier mono top-shots. This is a right-hand retrieve, 2-speed lever drag reel that combines high-end machining with the raw torque of a much larger winch.

Built from a single piece of 6061-T6 machined aluminium, the frame is incredibly rigid, ensuring that the 17-4 grade stainless steel gears never slip or bind under load. The 2-speed system is the real highlight: use the high gear to burn lures or recover line, and simply click into the low gear when youre locked into a battle with a stubborn reef dweller.

Technical Specifications

The CAV-5II offers increased line capacity over the narrow models, making it the perfect choice for varied UK boat fishing:

Key Performance Features

• Dual-Speed Gearing: This model features a 4.7:1 and 2.1:1 setup. The low gear is an absolute tractor gear, providing massive mechanical advantage for winching big fish or heavy leads from the seabed.

• Standard Width Spool: The wider spool provides significantly more line capacity (up to 570m of 0.32mm), which is ideal for deep-water marks or when you want to use a longer monofilament shock leader.

• Carbonite Lever Drag: Using specialized Cals Drag Grease, the lever drag is exceptionally smooth. It allows you to set a precise Strike position and adjust effortlessly to Full or Freespool during a fight.

• Silent Retrieve: The internal mechanism is designed for a quiet, smooth cranking experience, providing better feedback through the rod so you can feel exactly what your lure or bait is doing.

Where to Use the Cavalla CAV-5II RH

This standard-width 2-speed is the ultimate choice for:

• General Deep-Water Boat Fishing: Whether you are fishing the wrecks for Cod or Ling or targeting deep-water Rays, the extra line capacity and low-speed gear make this reel a dream to use.

• Targeting Large Inshore Sharks: The 24lb drag and high capacity make it perfect for Smoothhound and Tope. The on/off bait clicker is loud and crisp, ensuring you hear every run.

• Norway & Iceland Expeditions: If you need a compact reel that can still hold enough line for 100m+ depths and has the power to move double-figure Cod, this is the one.

• Heavy Tide Estuary Fishing: The low 2.1:1 gear ratio is perfect for retrieving heavy leads in fast-moving water without putting unnecessary strain on your wrist or the reels internals.

Gerrys Pro Tip: The Cavalla series comes with an incredible 5-year warranty, which is a testament to how much Okuma trusts these stainless steel internals. If you want a reel that will last you a decade of hard saltwater use, this is the investment to make.
